Being an Author; Reality and Illusions
Here are my (now popped) illusions:
1. I kinda thought being an author would magically transport me
to a land of bunnies and rainbows.
2. I thought someone else would do the hard parts, like the
promotion.
3. I thought I’d get to quit my day job immediately.
4. I thought I’d spend all my time writing.
5. I thought the hardest part was finishing the book.
The realities are:
1. No bunnies, no rainbows -- yet.
2. I’ve been learning about promotion on the go, although I’ve
found a great resource in my SupaGurl Heather, who put me on this blog tour!
3. My day job gets in the way of my writing all the time, which
is especially frustrating when I’m 90 percent done with the sequel to For Ever. Grrr.
4. Even when I’m writing, I think I spend more time staring at
the computer screen than actually typing.
5. The hardest part is putting years of hard work out there for
critical review.
What do other people think being a writer is like?
LOL. I honestly don’t know! Very few people who know me are
aware I’ve even published a book. Some people know that I write fiction, so
they mostly think it’s a hobby. And particularly with indie/self-publish, I think
there’s still a pervasive feeling that it’s not real. I’m just glad to be
writing, and I’ve gotten some very rewarding feedback from people (who I never
would have met otherwise) saying they enjoyed the story. That makes me feel
like a real writer!
About the Author:
I grew up in Southern California before
moving to Northern California for college, where I majored in English and
psychology. I've been a professional writer for more than a decade, but I just
finished my first novel in 2008 -- for fun and practice. Then I wrote the
second one -- For Ever -- which is for sale on Amazon. When I'm not writing
fiction, I work as a freelance public relations writer. I live in Portland,
Ore., with my husband, the saint who spent an entire weekend reading For Ever.
